CheckdiskCheckdisk can be used to check for file system errors and bad sectors on the hard drive.
Follow these steps to use Checkdisk.
- From the Windows Vista default Start menu, click Computer.
- In the Computer window, click to select the local disk. From the Organize menu, click Properties.
- In the Local Disk Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab. On the Tools tab, in the Error-checking box, click Check Now.

- In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
- In the Checkdisk Local Disk dialog box, select the Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check boxes, and then click Start.

- In the Microsoft Windows dialog box, to schedule disk check on the next restart, click Schedule disk check.

- Restart the computer.
- The next time the computer is turned on, the disk check executes before entering Windows.
